Duke of Hollywood Tailors is a third-generation-owned tailoring shop. It originally was opened as Hollywood Tailors in 1936 when our grandfather, William B. Samuelson, moved to Houston in 1936. At that time, there were many tailor shops surrounding the square where City Hall was located. When W.B. died in 1962, his son Lionel E. Samuelson took over the business.

Around 1969 or 1970 Lionel decided to go back to school at the University of Texas to get an accounting degree, he sold the building to his sister, Udis, and her husband, David, who had been operating Duke's Man's Shop two doors down at 309 Travis since 1949.

For about three years David and Udis operated both of the stores with their sons, Allen and Michael. In 1971 David and Udis merged the two businesses into Duke of Hollywood Tailors at 305 Travis.

Allen and Michael took over the business in 1980 when David and Udis retired. Because of the changed environment in downtown Houston, and the advent of "shopping malls" across the city, downtown retail business slowly began to disappear. As a result, Allen and Michael were forced to split in February 1982 because Duke of Hollywood could no longer support two families. Michael continued to run the family business just as his father had done for more than 30 years before him. In fact virtually no changes were made until Michael added the shoe shine stand in 1997 - marking the introduction of Weldon Renfro.

Michael hoped that the reincarnation of downtown Houston would see the return of retail shopping to the area. Unfortunately, that has not happened as yet and may never.

With that in mind, in 2001, Michael Shapiro and his sister, Stephenie, performed major renovations to the building - both upstairs and down - and has opened two full-service bars (both upstairs and downstairs) to compliment the tailoring and shoe-shine businesses. The bar, known as CharBar was named after Michael's youngest daughter Charlien. CharBar is all about "personal service." People who frequent CharBar know that they're going to be treated right. Michael is a hands-on owner and is there almost every night of the week - to interact with all of his customers.

CharBar officially opened June 5, 2002 at 5:00 p.m.
